@millie-spencer September 2023

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) created the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) to provide real-time climate data. Their platform Climate at a Glance uses NOAA's global land and ocean surface temperature analysis data to provide comprehenive global-scale temperature data on a variety of scales for the study of climate change.

I looked at the NCEI city time series data for Roanoke, Virgnia. Roanoke is a city of less than 100,000 people in southwest Virginia, bordering the Blueridge Mountains. This dataset plots average annual temperatures from 1946 to 2023 in Roanoke. The data is downloadable as a CSV and records monthly average temperature in degrees farenheit (°F). The three higest annual average temperatures occurred in 2020, 2019, and 2017 all recording annual average temperatures above 62°F, and the mean 1991-2020 temperature is 60.2°F. The average annual temperature is following a general increasing trend across the timeseries.
